Flower Pressing

Image
Hi everyone! In this post, we will be flower pressing, so you'll need to hunt for some in your garden, or find some flowers on a walk! You will need: - Flowers - Books or a flower press - Blotting paper or kitchen roll You can press flowers using a press or using books. I am using blotting paper, but you can also use kitchen roll Place your blotting paper and flowers between the pages of a big book. Add weight to the book with books and other heavy items.   I pressed these flowers for 10 days - this is what they look like now! You can do lots of crafty things with your pressed flowers, I stuck mine to different bits of paper and card and made a hanging display. Threading

Image
In this post, we are doing threading! You can use lots of different things from around your home to make beads, but today I’m using straws, cardboard and pasta. Hope everyone enjoys it! You will need: - Thread - Scissors - Objects such as pasta, beads, cardboard, paper straws, etc You can get creative with what you can find to use as beads on your garland. If you're using a straw, cut it into small shapes. Tie a bead to the end of the string, and use tape to make a point on the other end. This will make it easier to thread. Punch holes in the card, and then cut round them to make shapes. Curved pasta like I used can be tricky to thread with, penne is a good choice for little ones.   This is one I've made to show you some ideas! Momentary Sculptures with Abi

Image
Hello, I ’ m Abi and welcome to Aspex at Home! In this post, we’re creating momentary sculptures inspired by Peter Fischli and David Weiss. I hope you have lots of fun, and remember to try lots of different objects! You’ll need to collect some interesting objects from around the house, or you could try to find some on a walk to make nature-themed sculptures. Try out how different objects look together!     Place your objects in interesting ways and balance them - quickly snap a photo before they fall! You'll need to take the photographs quickly after you let go - so you might need an assistant to help you out.  Share your artwork with us by tagging @aspex_takepart and using the hashtag #AspexatHome.

Bird Feeders

Image
In this post, we are going to be making bird feeders! I have been spending a lot of time in the garden with my little boy over the past few  weeks and we have really enjoyed feeding the birds,  so we thought this week we would have a go at making our own bird feeders - and we’d love for you to join in too!  You can keep these really simple or get creative with your designs, choosing different shapes and creating patterns with your seeds. You will need:  - Cardboard  - Pencil or Pen - Bird Seed - Peanut butter (or coconut oil)  - String or ribbon  - Teaspoon  - Scissors      Draw & Cut Out: First you need to draw a shape onto cardboard. You can design your own or draw around an object from your house.  Cut out your shape and make a small hole in the top for later - you may need a grown-up to help with this bit. Spread: Spread peanut butter onto your shape using the back of a teaspoon.  Sprinkle: Cover your shape with birdseed so that it sticks to the peanut butter.  Hang Up: Use som

Origami Butterflies with Russell

Image
Hello, Russell here. Welcome to another edition of Aspex Family Saturday’s at Home. What we’re going to be doing today is making origami butterflies and cranes.  What you’ll need for this is some origami paper; don’t worry if you haven’t got any, consider using pages from an old book, an old map or maybe even downloading some textures or patterns offline, print them off onto A4 paper and them make them into square pieces.  Then once you’ve got those, follow the tutorials, see how it’s done and see what you can make, have fun! Drawing Game

Image
In this post, we are making a drawing game! Roll the dice to find your colour. You can stick with one colour the whole time or roll for each part of the drawing! You will need… Dice Card Paper Pin Paperclip Pens and pencils You can also make a lucky dip to choose your subject. I went with a nature theme. I used a simple coin flip to choose what medium I was going to use. Finally, roll the dice to decide the colour you will use! Here is my dark blue worm, plus other things I have added to my picture! A red butterfly, pink leaves, yellow flowers and light blue leaves. You can choose any colours, subjects or mediums you like - or something completely different! Paperchain Dolls with Jordan

Image
In this post, we're going to be creating paperchain dolls with the help of Jordan! Hi everyone! Jordan here, today I wanted to share with you a really fun way of creating some playful paper dolls. My daughter Ivy absolutely loved doing this. She enjoyed playing with them and taking them on adventures.          You can decide to create all your characters to be similar and a practical way of achieving continuity is to create a paper template. Sketch a figure and cut it out. If not you can draw all your characters individually! To create your paper dolls the paper being used has to be quite strong. If you have card that's great! If not, just use something like a cereal box like I have done. You will now have to use the template you created and draw around it as many times as you wish. Make sure you link the characters hands to form a chain! Make it as long as you wish! The next step is to use any drawing, colouring or sticking material to decorate as

Wiggling Fish

Image
In this post, we’re making fish out of toilet roll tubes. A grown up might need to do the cutting but little ones can have fun with the decorating and making a home for their fish. Enjoy!      You will need: - Toilet roll tubes - Scissors -Pens, paint or crayons You can also use p aint or si lver foil and glue to decorate your fish.            Cut your toilet roll tube like this to make your fish. There's a fish shape template at the bottom of this post. The fish can now be coloured however you like, or collaged like I have done here with this silver foil Why not make a pond for your fish to live in? You can also make other creatures like tadpoles.          You can also make other creatures like tadpoles Here is a template of how to cut your fish and tadpoles. It can be quite fiddly, so you can make the designs a bit simpler if you wish! Share your artwork with us by tagging @aspex_takepart and using the hashtag #AspexatHome
